As I went over the various areas of medical specialities there were few that caught my eye that I found both challenging and interesting. The two that I was most interested in were neurology and obstetrics/ gynecology. I am familiar with neurology because I was in a car accident that resulted in fracturing my back. Due to this, I had to have surgery and had to see a neurologist. A neurologist specializes in the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles, and autonomic nervous systems. Before my surgery I assumed a neurologist only specialized in functions of the brain. Therefore, it was intriguing to me how neuroscience is used to also focus on injuries including the spinal cord because such injuries can affect our brain. When I attended my appointments it was hard for me to understand certain terminology that the doctor explained to me about my surgery and injuries. Therefore, I believe this has presented a challenge for me as an interpreter because there is going to be plenty of terminology that I will have to interpret and explain in spanish. However, before I can do that I need to be able to familiarize and understand it in my first language. Furthermore, obstetrics and gynecology interest me because as a female I have learned so much about my body and the different things women’s bodies face . I believe women go through so much with their body such as pregnancy, menstrual cycle, STI’s, diseases and so much more. It interests me to learn more about the female body and how an OB-GYN can give treatment and advice on how to maintain a healthier body and help avoid or treat complications for women. I think a challenge with terminology as an interpreter in this area would be when talking about the reproductive system because there are so many different functions and outlets connected to this that just continuously branch off into different components. This all includes different terminology that can be a challenge because its different branches of components need to be memorized so it is explained accordingly without confusing a patient. I am familiar with some aspects of both of these medical specialties due past appointments. I find them both interesting and hope I can continue to learn more. |
