Some strategies that I can implement when interpreting is to mainly take notes. Through patient visits, I can make notes on words or phrases that I found difficult to interpret and try to find the actual translation and try to interpret it in different ways in order to embed it into my brain. I can also try to make flashcards of words that are not often used in interpreting and try to learn them that way. Another strategy is presenting myself earlier to an appointment and talking with the doctor to ask what should be expected for the visit and try to prepare myself before the visit. Research also serves as a gateway to learn more about the world of medicine. Taking time out of your day to just read an article and try to interpret it in that sense can be very helpful because you can expand your vocabulary and test your interpreting skills. Most areas that are most common for medical interpreters are outpatient clinics such which can include the following appointments–follow up visits at any health center and initial evaluations. Although outpatient clinics are common, I believe that medical interpreters should be provided in inpatient and outpatient clinics. I believe that although there are common areas of interpreting in, I don’t think I could ever be opposed to interpreting in different areas because I will be able to learn more and become more knowledgeable in those areas to be of better help the next time I am presented in a situation.
