The pituitary gland is an important function in the human body for various reasons. One of the reasons being, it manages the bodily functions to produce growth hormones into the bloodstream. The pituitary gland, also known as the “master gland” or hypophysis, is one of the two parts that controls the function of the endocrine system. The other part being the hypothalamus which is the main link to the endocrine system and the nervous system. In addition, the pituitary gland is as small as the size of a pea and is located in the brain. It is found in the sella which is in the bony hollow, established in the base of the skull.
Furthermore, the pituitary gland is important because without it our body can suffer from medical problems. It affects activity in the human body such as our metabolism, physical growth, reproduction and blood pressure. It is needed in the body for many vital physical purposes. Moreover, the pituitary gland is controlled by the hypothalamus which is located above it. Additionally, the pituitary gland can hold the produced hormones received from hypothalamus prior to releasing them into the bloodstream to stimulate the production. The pituitary gland releases many hormones and controls how they operate in the body. These hormones that are produced by the pituitary gland include adrenocorticotropic hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, prolactin, growth hormone, and melanocyte-stimulating hormone. Overall, the pituitary gland is crucial to supply these hormones into the body’s bloodstream. All these hormones contribute to the function of one’s body and serve a great purpose for a healthy development.
