I believe that in certain states it may seem as though present day legislation is enough, but other states are able to prove just the opposite of that. Executive Order 13166 is in place to ensure that medical settings provide an interpreter, and some may do that, but they do not advertise that there are interpreters available which means many do not know they have services that can be provided to them. In some cases, there are no interpreters available at all and the patient is then forced to either try and understand their appointment or make somebody come with them to translate which is very unfortunate and most of the time an inconvenience due to work. I believe that for present day legislation to be enough the services need to be accessible to all as well as widely advertised and not only in hospitals in cities, but also in small town clinics. Thankfully, today, I do somewhat see Executive Order 13166 being applied in Massachusetts. Although not too long services were not accessible or advertised, thankfully I do see the changes that have been made over the years. Years ago, I would go to appointments for family members and translate for them, and I am so grateful to see that today, in our hometowns, interpreters are accessible to them for their appointments and translation is no longer needed. Although I have seen changes over the years, there is still much more that needs to be done to make sure the present day legislation becomes enough all over the country. |
