The skin is known to be one of the largest organs of the body and it is made of water, protein, fats and minerals. The skin is intended to protect your body from germs and it helps regulate body temperature. The three layers of the skin are the epidermis, the top layer, the dermis which is the middle layer and the hypodermis the bottom or fatty layer. The epidermis is the layer that we can see and touch. Some functions of the epidermis is that it acts as a protective barrier against bacteria and germs from entering the body and bloodstream that can cause infections. It also makes new skin, these new cells replace approximately 40,000 old skin cells that the body sheds everyday. It also provides skin color because it contains melanin. The middle layer of the skin is known as the dermis and it makes up to 90% of the skin’s thickness. Some of its functions are collagen and elastin. The collagen is a protein that helps make the skin cells stronger and more resilient and the elastin helps the skin be flexible. It also help grow hair, through the roots of the hair folicles. Also the nerves in the dermis tells you when something is too hot or too cold, itchy, soft. The dermis also has oil glands to help keep the skin soft and smooth. It also has sweat glands in the dermis that release sweat through skin pores. As sweat helps regulate the body temperature. The dermis also supplies blood that provides nutrients to the epidermis. The last layer which is the bottom layer of the skin is known as the hypodermis and it is the fatty layer. Some of its functions are that it cushions muscles and bones. Has connective tissue that connects layers of skin to muscles and bone. It also helps the nerves and blood vessels.
